Biblical Principles for Pastoral Care in Small Groups

Sarah was facing her biggest nightmare. She had resisted leading a small group for years because she lacked confidence in her ability to give wise counsel to the problems of others. Her pastor had finally convinced her that she did not need to worry. “It rarely happens”, he told her. She has been an excellent leader, and her group has grown closer. Lately, however, group members have become more open and are turning to her to solve their problems.

What Christian Counselors Say About Small Groups

Some have said that small group leaders are not qualified to fill the role of Christian counselor; it is best to leave it up to the professionals. I, personally, am not a trained counselor. I have spent some time with Christian counselors, and I have spent time listening and reading what several respected counselors have to say about small groups. I have determined that while small groups and small group leaders may not think they can be Christian counselors, Christian counselors widely say that people they work with need to be in small groups as part of their basic treatment!

Why So Many House Churches?

Back in the 1960s, when I first became acquainted with Christian communities that gathered at least once a week in a private home to worship God, most of them were found in the inner city. A relatively small proportion were located in rural communities

Curriculum-less?

The church is arousing from centuries of sleepy irrelevance, secret abuse, and cleric arrogance. A new recovery group of disciples is awakening-dressed in humility, marching in unity, and wielding weapons of spiritual power against a pervasive kingdom of darkness.
