|
In large part, discipleship is simply an older Christian taking an interest in the life of a younger Christian and sharing with him, guiding him--just helping him along the Christian journey.

What is a disciple? In Greek, disciple literally means a learner. Another way to define a disciple is by looking at his or her relationships.

Two years into my ministry at First Christian Church in Naperville, Illinois, I came to a stunning realization. Although by all outward signs our groups were a success, something vital was missing. A person could be actively involved in our small group system (or our Adult Bible Classes) and conceivably never learn how to have a personal prayer life, never get a basic overview of the Bible, never learn Bible study skills, never discover their spiritual gifts, and never learn how to share their faith.

Discipleship in the Local Church

The word translated "disciple" is mathetes, which means a learner or apprentice. Although Christians are ultimately Christ's disciples, it is clear that Christ works through other Christians in this process, because he commissioned the church to "make disciples" (Mt. 28:19).

Discipleship and Spiritual Growth in Small Groups and Sunday School

Evangelism is only the first step in what the church and the individual Christian are called to: disciple making. Being a disciple and making disciples are not solo endeavors.
