The Search for the Historical Adam

The Search for the Historical Adam

Did Adam and Eve really exist? Here’s why it matters.

Overview

Christians have an undeserved black eye as anti-science bumpkins. It is a reputation that has stuck, despite our best efforts in the classroom, the lab, and the media.

Today, the scientific challenge to faith comes not so much from evolution and the fossil record—though the constantly evolving theory continues to spark much debate, in and out of the church. The new challenge, instead, comes from studies of the human genome. These studies, according to the Christianity Today article by Richard Ostling, seem to cast doubt on the existence of a literal Adam and Eve. While a full discussion of these theories and the evidence they purport to be supported by is beyond the scope of this Bible study, this is a good place to examine anew what the Bible says about Adam and Eve—and why it matters.
