Supplies Needed:
Paper, pens or markers, index cards with simple drawings (house, flower, bike, car, etc.)
Activity:
Have group members choose partners, and ask them to sit back-to-back. Each pair must decide who will draw (who will be the "copier") and who will describe what to draw. Give copier a sheet of paper and a pen or marker. Give the other partner a card with a simple object drawn on it—they should not let their copier see this card. Have the partners with the cards describe how to draw the object to the copiers. Only describe the shapes and lines; don't explain what the object is. In other words, if they are describing a house, they may say, "There are two vertical lines spread apart, with a horizontal line across the top of them. That horizontal line is the bottom of a triangle." Give the pairs three to five minutes to complete the activity. Then partners should compare their drawings.
Unpacking Questions:
- For those explaining the drawing, how did you choose how to describe the picture?
- For those drawing, how did you feel while the drawing was being described? What was it like imitating or copying a drawing you hadn't seen?
- What was your reaction when you compared drawings? How close were they? Were you surprised?
- What would have made this activity easier? For instance, what if you were able to see the picture briefly?
- Each day we are asked to imitate Christ. How do we know what it looks like to imitate Christ?
- What makes imitating Christ difficult? What would make it easier?
